There are some situations where parts of a file are stored in various locations. In some instances, only part of the file remains as one or more parts are over written or are inaccessible due to a faulty disk drive or a bad sector. Recovery will take place if the section of the file can be successfully retrieved and if the file type is known.

There is no guarantee that a file will be recovered in whole or in part. Much of this depends on how much free space is on the hard disk drive. It is advisable to ensure there is enough disk space to recover files prior to recovery.
