What are Port and Application Rules? (Firewall Exceptions/Rules)

You can view, add, and modify application and port filtering rules using the Advanced Options under the Firewall feature. The use of custom rules allows you to restrict network traffic for specifc applications or add them as an exception through the firewall.

To add an application rule:

  1. Click the Advanced Options... button at the bottom of the Firewall page.
  2. Click the Application Rules tab at the top.
  3. Select Add... and click Choose File...
  4. Navigate to the program directory and select the .EXE (executable file).
  5. Select an Action from the table below and click OK.
Action Description
Allow

Allows the program to send and receive information through the firewall.

Block Blocks the program from sending or receiving information through the network.
Outgoing Allows the program to send information and blocks incoming traffic to the application.
Prompt

A prompt will display each time the application attempts a network connection.

 

Filter Rules

You can allow an application to use only a single port or range of ports, as well as specify the protocol and direction to allow. You can quickly edit, disable, or remove filter rules. Filter rules will override any application rules set for the same application.

To add a filter rule:

  1. Click the Advanced Options... button at the bottom of the Firewall page.
  2. Click the Filter Rules tab at the top.
  3. Select Add... and click Choose File...
  4. Navigate to the program directory and select the .EXE (executable file).
  5. Select a Protocol to allow.
  6. Choose a Single or Range of port numbers and enter the numbers to allow.
  7. Select a Direction to allow and click OK.
